Sue Ellen Zhang

Democrat for
PA House of Representatives 160th District

I’m a dedicated wife and mother of four, with a multifaceted background in counseling, entrepreneurship, business, and education. As a healthcare executive and adjunct professor, my commitment extends to advocating for women’s rights, elder care, mental health, higher education, community development, and good governance. From overcoming challenges as a young parent to earning a master’s in counseling, my journey reflects a steadfast dedication to education, service, and community well-being. As your State Representative for the 160th District, I’ll draw upon this diverse professional experience to champion policies promoting inclusivity, economic growth, and community resilience.

Priorities

As a Democratic candidate, I am unwavering in my commitment to advancing women’s rights. I will actively engage in the legislative process to create and champion new laws that safeguard reproductive rights, eliminate barriers to healthcare, and promote equal opportunities for women in the workplace. By collaborating with fellow lawmakers, advocacy groups, and healthcare professionals, we can enact meaningful legislation that addresses disparities, prioritizes affordable and inclusive healthcare coverage, and empowers women to make informed choices about their own bodies.

I am dedicated to addressing the pressing issues surrounding elder care through a proactive legislative approach. Collaborating with stakeholders and experts, I will work to craft comprehensive legislation that ensures accessible and affordable elder care services. By prioritizing caregiver support and enhancing the quality of life for our seniors, we can build a future where our elderly citizens receive the care and respect they deserve.

As a mental health practitioner, I recognize the urgent need to prioritize mental health. Through legislative action, I will tirelessly work to create new laws that improve access to high quality mental health services, reduce practitioner burnout, reduce stigma, and integrate mental health education into our communities and schools. By collaborating with mental health professionals and advocacy groups, we can create a comprehensive framework that addresses the complex challenges individuals face, fostering a society that prioritizes the well-being of all its members.

I will work hard to enhance the strength and vitality of our universities by expanding access to higher education. Through legislative initiatives, I will focus on reducing the burden of student debt, securing increased funding for public education institutions, and advocating for policies that ensure equal opportunities in higher education. By fostering collaboration with educators, students, and policymakers, we can develop legislation that not only empowers individuals to pursue their academic aspirations without unnecessary financial barriers but also fortifies the overall resilience and accessibility of our higher education system.

Championing policies that encourage small business growth is at the core of my focus, aimed at creating an environment where local enterprises not only flourish but also contribute to the economic development and unique character of our communities. Through strategic and thoughtful legislation, my goal is to empower individuals not only for individual prosperity but also to collectively enhance the resilience and vibrancy of our shared community fabric. In my commitment to strengthen communities, I will advocate for legislation fostering inclusivity, economic growth through small businesses, and community resilience.

Hi! I'm Sue Ellen !

I am driven by a sincere desire to help, assist, support, and serve. I believe that our community deserves to be heard, cared for, and supported, and I am confident that I am the right person to be there for all of you.

I immigrated from Jamaica to Upper Darby with my mother at the age of 5. Navigating through my senior year at Upper Darby High School, the challenges of parenthood emerged, preventing me from pursuing college like many of my peers. Fast forward almost a decade, and I found love, got married, and expanded my family with four children.

In our quest for a brighter future, my husband, a high school and college dropout, and I made a joint decision to return to school, driven by the determination to attain a better education. Through perseverance and hard work, I successfully transferred from DCCC to the University of Pennsylvania, achieving both a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in counseling. Following graduation, my professional path led me to a fulfilling career as a mental health therapist. One notable role was at Child Guidance in Delco, where I provided court-appointed counseling for truant students. Eventually, I established my own counseling practice in Delco (Upper Darby/Havertown).

After my husband completed law school, our family moved to Lower Merion, and during the challenging times of COVID, we relocated to Chadds Ford where three of our children attend the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District.

Currently, I serve as a healthcare executive in Philadelphia, where I integrate my passion for assisting others with my professional expertise. Moreover, I find fulfillment in sharing my expertise as an adjunct professor in Psychology at Lincoln University. This enduring commitment to education, service, and authentic care for the well-being of those around me has intricately shaped the course of my life.

In tandem with my current responsibilities, I am actively pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree. My research is specifically focused on supporting mothers in the workplace. Juggling roles as a healthcare executive and adjunct professor, I bring a wealth of experience to my candidacy, underlining my dedication to making a meaningful impact in both spheres.
